Summer is on its way, and with it, the dry heat that threatens to take the luster from the leaves of your trees. How do you keep your little patch of Texas shade full of life even when the temperatures keep creeping upward? Keeping a few tips and tricks for quality tree care may not solve every tree care problem, but they’ll get you headed in the right direction.
Watering
It gets dry in Texas regardless of the season, so watering your trees is one of the simplest and best ways you can tackle tree care. While it’s true younger trees need a lot more frequent watering than older trees, you shouldn’t neglect older trees, especially when the cloudless blue skies haven’t provided any rain for a while.
Mulching
Mulching the area around your trees is almost always a good thing. It moderates soil temperature, reduces evaporation, and breaks down into organic matter that helps the trees and soil micro-biome. Mulch should be applied 2–3 inches deep from the trunk to the dripline of the tree if possible. Never build it up against the trunk of the tree and don’t make it too deep or it will have negative effects on the tree.
Getting Advice
If you’re still seeing your trees struggle with health problems, there’s no shame in asking for help with tree care. Getting the opinion of an educated, experienced arborist can actually be one of the best tree care steps you can take.
